Video Captures Elephants Almost Drowning During Recent Kruger Park Floods

During the recent flooding of the Sabie River in the Kruger National Park, it wasn’t only the vehicles that battled to cross the river… but the wildlife too.

Marijke Arends-Meiring shared the below video to a Kruger National Park group page on Facebook, showing some elephants getting into trouble as they tried to cross the flooded river three weeks ago.

She says it was just a few kilometres north of Lower Sabie.

“First I thought they were swimming… but soon realised the current was sweeping them away,” she wrote.

“It was nerve wrecking. I tried to keep up but with all the bushes it was not an easy task.

“Some elephants on the other side of the river were very unhappy. One of them wanted to cross as well and you can hear her constantly screaming. [At around 3’35”.]

“At one point she tried to cross but turned around. Didn’t have the nerve I think. It was sad to see how upset she was.”

Fortunately, Marijke says: “All ended well and the ones I saw all arrived safely.”
