Durban-based snake rescuer Nick Evans had an early start on Wednesday when he was called to catch a black mamba hiding behind some potatoes in Westville.

Writing on his Facebook page to his 73 000 followers, Evans said: “This Black Mamba found itself into a storage area of a large kitchen, in Westville, and hid behind some bags of potatoes!
“Where there’s stored food, be it for humans or animals, there’s usually rats lurking around (rats are in most homes anyway). I didn’t see any, or evidence of any. But maybe that’s because of the mamba? They’re excellent for rodent control!”
Evans added that the snake was roughly 2.3 metres in length and was a “straightforward catch”.
