De Wet was one of SANParks’ senior manager in the Environmental Crime Investigative Unit (ECI), based at Groenkloof in Pretoria, and well known for his fight against rhino poaching. South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a statement:

“Details are sketchy at this stage and circumstances around the incident are under investigation. SANParks Executive Management sends out sincere condolences to his immediate family, friends and the SANParks family. The memorial and funeral arrangements are underway.”

Condolences have poured in. StopRhinoPoaching.com said: “Having had the pleasure of working with Kobus de Wet for many years, hearing this news earlier today has been devastating. His contribution to the rhino cause will always be remembered.”

Former colleagues called him the ‘Nemesis of rhino poachers’ and remembered him chasing poachers in a helicopter, or on his motorbike in the Skukuza staff village.
