Weekend visitors to Hluhluwe were witness to a great battle between two elephant bulls. BHEKI SHANGASE captured these photos as the elephants fought it out, tusk to tusk.
Bheki, who told SAPeople he is new to wildlife photography, shot some powerful photos of this once-in-lifetime experience.
He describes the encounter as “absolute chaos” as the two bulls – both in musth – ended up in a “serious fight”.
Elephants in musth are usually more aggressive as their testosterone levels increase to as much as 60 times more than at other times!
Bheki wrote on Parks and Wildlife – Zululand (PAWZ) facebook page that “the scent of bulls in musth dominated the scene” and that it was a “very scary event”.
“Dust all over the place, and all I could hear was the tusks locking sounds, unbelievable!”
“This bull sustained some minor injuries in his truck as blood can be seen and seemed in pain and surrendered the fight…”
