Kariega Game Reserve has issued the first photo – as well as a heartwarming video – of its miracle rhino Thandi, who courageously survived a brutal poaching in 2012, and her newborn calf that was born on Tuesday 24 January 2017 in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The mother and calf were first located using a drone as they were safely hidden in thick bush. They were found on Thursday 26 January, a few anxious days after Thandi was reported missing.
The birth of Thandi’s first calf, Thembi (meaning Hope), on 13 January 2015 made headlines around the world. She brought much needed hope to rhino conservationists embroiled in a seemingly losing battle against rhino poaching.
The birth of Thandi’s second calf was particularly sentimental to the Rushmere family who had gathered together to celebrate the life of Colin Rushmere (senior), visionary and founder of Kariega Game Reserve. Colin passed away on 20 January 2017.
The Rushmere family comments: “The birth of Thandi’s second calf is a beautiful testament to the legacy our father left behind and this calf will be a joyful reminder of a special man and an inspired life. Dad was an eternal optimist and believed anything is possible – Thandi seems to be echoing his sentiments.”
Kariega Foundation patron Graeme Rushmere comments: “Saving Thandi’s life was never a decision – it was the collective instinct of many incredible people with Dr. William Fowlds leading the charge. It has been a long process that has taken enormous effort and resources from people on the ground and all over the world. We are deeply grateful to them all.
“The birth of Thandi’s second calf sends a very clear message that together we are stronger than the poachers and we will win this war on poaching. Rhinos and all endangered animals on earth can thrive again. Our efforts will be worth it.”
