South Africa is renowned for its magnificent wildlife. From the Big Five – elephant, lion, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard – to the Little Five – elephant shrew, ant lion, rhinoceros beetle, buffalo weaver and leopard tortoise – the country’s plains, seas and skies are natural treasure troves for the animal and bird lover.
Other animals such as hippo, giraffe, cheetah, kudu, wild dog, baboon, wildebeest and zebra are all closely associated with Africa and are often seen in South Africa’s conservation areas.
The elusive leopard (Panthera pardus). A pride of lions (Panthera leo), keeping themselves cool during the heat of the day. Lion searching for it's prey. The stately giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is the tallest land-living mammal. The blue wildebeest or brindled gnu (Connochaetes taurinus). A member of the Big Five, the African or Cape buffalo (Syncerus caffer). Buffalo grazing Young female Greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros). A gang of Cape or Chacma baboons (Papio ursinus) hogs the road. A mother white rhino (Ceratotherium simum) and her calf. A young white rhino. The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana).
