WATCH Beluga Whale ‘Celebrates Bok Victory’ Playing with Rugby Ball

A video of a Beluga whale playing catch with a rugby ball in the icy cold ocean is going viral, with many joking that the whale is celebrating the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup (RWC) win.

According to Jacaranda FM, the crew of the boat, which includes South Africans, took the rugby ball along for the trip as a “lucky charm” for the RWC. (And it worked!)

Alon Kowen, who uploaded the video quipped: “Beluga Whale celebrating the Springboks victory somewhere close to the South Pole!”

Apparently Beluga Whales enjoy interacting with their own species, and with others. However it is UNLIKELY that this took place in the South Pole!!! Beluga Whales in the wild are only found in the northern hemisphere, usually in the Arctic Ocean although most do migrate south in summer… but not further south than Canada (and definitely not across the equator!)

SAPeople follower Alex Kuier, who lives in Europe, said the whale looks a lot like ‘Hvaldimir’ – the male beluga whale which has become famous since it was first spotted by fishermen near Hammerfest in northern Norway in April 2019. The whale, which was found with a camera harness, and was reportedly a ‘spy’ for the Russians, has stayed in the area and has displayed behaviour showing it is comfortable with human contact.

Alon added: “Spot the Cape Town-built Gemini Craft and the South African accents ! ?? ??” Ja broe!
