As the Springboks gear up for the Test season later this year, the spotlight falls on the fitness of key players, especially as the United Rugby Championship (URC) and European competitions reach their crucial stages.

With injuries a growing concern, several key players have been sidelined in recent weeks, raising alarm among the team’s coaching staff.

Le Roux’s Surgery: Minor Setback, Quick Recovery Expected

One of the latest updates that caught attention came from veteran fullback Willie le Roux. The player, who has been filling in at flyhalf, posted a concerning image on social media showing himself in a hospital bed after undergoing surgery. However, the Bulls quickly reassured fans, confirming that le Roux had undergone a “minor repair” to his shoulder/neck area and would only be sidelined for a short time. A team spokesperson confirmed the procedure was successful, and the player is expected to return to full fitness soon.

Hanekom and Grobbelaar: Injury Worries on the Horizon

Yet, le Roux is not the only player to worry about. Bulls No 8 Cameron Hanekom, just back from a calf injury, was forced off early in his team’s game against Leinster after twisting his lower back. Coach Jake White played down the injury, calling it a spasm, and reassured fans that Hanekom is already walking and should make a full recovery. However, White did note that the team’s win had come at a cost, with winger Seb de Klerk receiving a red card, leaving him unavailable for the next match.

Another injury worry for the Bulls is hooker Johan Grobbelaar, who has been playing through shoulder pain. White acknowledged the intensity of the competition, which has seen several players sidelined due to suspensions, concussions, and injuries.

Springboks’ Growing Injury Toll: Key Players Sidelined

The Springbok squad will be keeping a close eye on the growing injury list in South African rugby. Several high-profile players are already out of action, including Steven Kitshoff, who has retired, and Elrigh Louw and Trevor Nyakane, both recovering from long-term injuries. Eben Etzebeth has taken longer than expected to recover from a concussion, and Grant Williams will be sidelined for two to three weeks due to a neck/back injury.

Faf de Klerk and Pieter-Steph du Toit: International Concerns

Meanwhile, veteran Faf de Klerk has reportedly fractured his thumb while playing for his Japanese club, Canon Eagles, and could miss up to two months of action. In addition, Pieter-Steph du Toit is set to return in April after undergoing shoulder surgery in January, when he will resume his duties with Japanese club Toyota Verblitz.
