President Jacob Zuma has congratulated South African hip hop artist Cassper Nyovest on being the first local musician to fill the 20,000 seating capacity Dome in Northgate, Johannesburg, without the assistance of any international act.
The SA entertainer – who produces, raps and writes – performed to a full capacity Dome arena over the weekend, fulfilling his dream – and campaign over the last few weeks – to #FillUpTheDome. In the process he has achieved a feat that no other South African artist has ever accomplished.
In a statement today, President Zuma said: “We congratulate Cassper Nyovest for his tremendous success which has demonstrated the rich talent that exists within our country’s music industry, especially amongst our youth.
“Cassper has also confirmed the enormous support for local music by our youth, which augurs well for the development of our arts, culture and heritage.”
His words of praise have caused a bit of a Twitter storm with some questioning the South African president’s priorities – taking two weeks to address #FeesMustFall, but only a day to congratulate Cassper.
The artist himself responded on Facebook with: “Thank you MR President Zuma. God bless.”
On Saturday, Cassper proudly wrote on Facebook (where he has over 1.2 million followers): “I’m not SA’s Kanye West or Micheal Jackson. I am Africa’s Cassper Nyovest!!! I wrote my name in the history books!!! Nyovest!!! The best!!! #FillUpTheDome.”
Hashtagging his real name #Refiloe (Refiloe Maele Phoolo), Cassper announced yesterday that his second album had gone Gold in three hours. (It’ll be in stores next week.)
Cassper is a multi-award winning artist whose accolades include an SA Music award and seven Hip Hop awards.
After making history this weekend, Cassper said: “Next year we do Orlando Stadium.” (Orlando has double the capacity.)
