Tap into your inner zef with Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord are taking the internet by storm. If you haven’t heard of  this South African rap-rave band yet, you can do a quick catch-up here and tap into your inner ‘zef’.

PLS BE WARNED: Some of their lyrics and language are slighly offensive BUT yislaaik their music’s catchy, their message is kind of inspirational and the Afrikaans slang and swearwords are shockingly entertaining! Die Antwoord crew consists of zef rap-rave master Ninja, singer Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek. Ninja has a secret fairy forest tattoo, Yo-Landi get her hair dyed because she says “it’s always important to remember your roots” and DJ Hi-Tek owns a PC.

Ninja was in various rap groups before Die Antwoord, until one day he tapped into his “inner zef” and discovered Die Antwoord. For those outside of South Africa (or Zuid-Afrika) who may not be familiar with the concept of ‘zef’, Ninja explains it’s “like the ultimate style. That’s where we find our full flex…It’s a South African style, and Die Antwoord is like f… Zef! It’s not something you can really explain. It’s something you kind of experience…It’s like on a video game when you reach a high level – basically zef is like the next level.”

On their website they describe themselves as the “love-child of many diverse cultures, black, white, coloured and alien, all pumped into one wild and crazy journey down the crooked path to enlightenment” who get their inspiration from “Cape Town’s fast and furious mini-bus taxis you can hear coming from blocks away with an evil Doom!
