Aisle or window: Which seat is better?
The aisle or window seats are both coveted when flying (no one actually chooses the middle seat) – but which one is better?
When booking a flight, you’re sometimes faced with choosing between an aisle or window seat. This choice might seem minor, but it can significantly impact your comfort and experience during the flight. Here are a few pros and cons of each option to help you decide which seat might be better for your next trip…
The aisle seat
Pros:
- Easy access: One of the biggest advantages of the aisle seat is the ease of movement. If you’re someone who likes to stretch your legs, visit the restroom, or grab items from your overhead bag, the aisle seat offers unobstructed access. This can be particularly beneficial on longer flights where you might need to move around to stay comfortable.
- More legroom: While legroom on planes is notoriously limited, the aisle seat often provides a little extra space. You can stretch your legs into the aisle, especially when the seatbelt sign is off, giving you a bit more comfort.
- Quick exit: If you’re in a rush to disembark once the plane lands, the aisle seat allows you to exit your row more quickly. This can be particularly advantageous if you have a tight connection or are eager to start your trip as soon as possible.
Cons:
- Potential disturbances: Sitting in the aisle seat can come with a few downsides. You might find yourself getting bumped by other passengers walking down the aisle or by the food and drink carts. Also, if your seatmates need to get up, you’ll be the one they’ll ask to move.
- Limited view: For those who enjoy watching the scenery during a flight, the aisle seat doesn’t offer much in terms of a view. You’ll miss out on the experience of seeing the landscape, clouds, or city lights from above.
The window seat
Pros:
- Scenic views: The window seat is the perfect choice for those who love a good view. Whether you’re flying over mountain ranges, oceans, or bustling cities, the window offers a unique perspective that you can’t get from any other seat on the plane. For many, this view is one of the highlights of the flight.
- Added privacy: Sitting by the window often feels more private. You’re tucked away from the aisle, which means fewer interruptions from passing passengers and crew. This can make the flight feel a bit more personal and peaceful.
- Resting spot: The window seat provides a surface to lean against, which can be a blessing if you want to sleep or rest. With a pillow or just the support of the wall, you can often get more comfortable than you would in an aisle seat.
Cons:
- Limited mobility: The biggest downside to window seating is the restricted movement. If you need to get up during the flight, you’ll have to ask your seatmates to move, which can be inconvenient and a little awkward, especially on a long flight or when they’re sleeping.
- Confined space: The window seat can sometimes feel a bit more cramped. With only one side open to the aisle, you might feel more confined or claustrophobic compared to the aisle. This is especially true on smaller planes or in economy class.
