SOUTH AFRICAN RESCUE WOMEN IN HAWAII
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said one of its rescue swimmers, Martin Wessemann, was on holiday in Hawaii when the incident occurred.
Martin and his South African friend, Sean Hutchinson, who lives in Hawaii, and another sailor Tony were returning to the harbour when they noticed two women in distress.

The women believed to be sisters, appeared to drive down the boat slipway in the harbour accidentally.
“We were on the boat next to the slip-way when we noticed the vehicle, with a female driver and a female passenger, drive past us down the slipway without pausing and the vehicle entered the water before floating further into the harbour and begin to sink.
“Both ladies were preparing to escape through the vehicles front windows and naturally Sean, and our fellow sailor Tony, and myself jumped into the water to assist them,” said Martin.

The rescuers helped the women escape from the sinking vehicle via the front passenger windows and got them to shore safely.
By the time the police, fire and rescue and ambulance arrived at the scene, Martin had tied a towline to the sinking vehicle with a rope.

“The two ladies were not injured and we believe the vehicle navigation system may have accidentally led them to drive down the slip-way. We were in the right place at the right time to help them,” said Martin.
A video of the incident can be seen here. Martin wears a grey shirt, while Tony and Sean are wearing red and black, respectively.
