The travel phenomenon of ‘set-jetting’ is currently making waves in the travel industry and chances are, you’ve been wanting to experience it.

The trend is the result of travel inspiration found in popular films and TV series, where viewers see and wish to visit those exact places or sets where movies or television series were filmed.

As previously reported, Lize Roodt, a Travel Counsellor, says that the ‘set-jetting’ trend has only been amplified over the last few years, after COVID-19 resulted in people being indoors, binge-watching movies and TV series.

“I have done my fair share of Eat Pray Love-inspired travel bookings. But even where a TV series or movie is not the main reason for travel, many clients like to add on day tours to these movie sets and special filming venues to fill their time in the destination.” Roodt said.

SET-JETTING SPOTS: WHERE DO TRAVELLERS WANT TO GO?

According to travel news, Expedia recently published the 2024 Set-jetting Forecast, which highlights how tourism to destinations is boosted when those sites are featured in movies and TV shows.

As per the data from Expedia’s forecast, travellers want to head to these destinations the most:

  • Romania, inspired by the Netflix TV series Wednesday.
  • Paris, inspired by TV show Emily in Paris.
  • South Korea, inspired by Squid Game.
  • Thailand, inspired by the third season of White Lotus.
  • Malta, inspired by the release of Gladiator 2.
  • The Scottish Highlands, inspired by Outlander.
  • LondonBath and Windsor, inspired by popular TV shows Bridgerton and The Crown.
  • The Florida Keys and the Bahamas, inspired by the new Apple TV series Bad Monkey.
  • Australia, inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s Distant Hills and Crazy Max prequel Friosa.
  • Greece, inspired by the newly released spy action thriller Confidential Agent: Argyll.
