Travellers flying between South Africa and Portugal now have more convenient options for flights on their trips.
A new flight route between South Africa and Portugal will open soon, with connecting flights via Maputo in Mozambique.
LAM AIRLINES
Mozambique is the convenient new gateway for passengers travelling between South Africa and Portugal.
Travel News reports that LAM-Mozambique Airlines will operate flights from Johannesburg to Lisbon (via Maputo) from December 12.
Daily flights to Lisbon are offered from Johannesburg. However, the most convenient connections to Lisbon through Maputo are on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
The airline is offering some promotional fares for under R 9000 per passenger for a return ticket.

LISBON FLIGHTS
These flights will be operated using a Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The aircraft has 30 seats in business class and 263 in economy class. LAM’s economy-class baggage allowance is two pieces at 23kg each and one piece of hand luggage (maximum 7kg).
“We believe the reintroduction of this flight will cater for the needs of our market as there is a strong Portuguese community in South Africa. We are excited about the reintroduction of this flight at the start of the festive period, so we can unite families at affordable fares and at the same time encourage this destination for tourism and business.” LAM said, per Travel News.

TRAVEL TO PORTUGAL
There are always a number of people travelling between South Africa and Portugal. This is due to the fact that SA has a sizable number of people with Portuguese roots.
Many travellers fly the route with Angola’s national carrier TAAG. The airline offers flights to Lisbon from Johannesburg and Cape Town, via its hub in Luanda.

SA’S PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY
Africa has a significant number of Portuguese people among its population. This is due to colonial histories.
South Africa has the largest Portuguese community on the continent, followed by Angola.
There are an estimated 750 000 Portuguese South Africans living in SA.
SOUTH AFRICANS IN PORTUGAL
Since Portugal has grown in popularity as a destination country for SA migrants in recent years there are quite a number of SA nationals now permanently based in Portugal.
South Africans are scattered in urban centres and rural parts of the small Western European country.
Many South Africans have made Portugal home through investment schemes such as golden visas. Others have used popular D7 visas to relocate to the European country.
Consequently, there is always a need for reasonable and convenient flights between the two countries.
