The Green Marine Europe Certification is a voluntary environmental certification programme for the maritime industry, created as a partnership between the North American environmental certification programme, Green Marine and the Surfrider Foundation, a European Union NGO in ocean and maritime protection, reports Travel News.

The certification programme highlights eight key performance indicators that represent “environmental excellence and leadership”. The performance indicators include:

  • aquatic invasive species,
  • pollutant air emissions,
  • nitrogen dioxide pollutant air emissions,
  • greenhouse gas emissions,
  • oil discharge,
  • waste management,
  • underwater radiated noise and
  • responsible ship recycling.

MSC Cruises achieved the highest possible score in all eight categories.

MSC UNVEILS THE MOST ENERGY-EFFICIENT CRUISE SHIP IN THE WORLD

The cruise company also just launched its newest vessel, designed to be the most energy-efficient cruise ship ever built: The MSC Euribia.

The vessel has been designed with the future in mind, reports Tourism Update, allowing for prospective innovations in sustainability to be incorporated, including carbon-neutral synthetic and other alternative fuels, as soon as they are available at scale.

The ship is the marine magnate’s second vessel, the first being MSC World Europa, to be powered by LNG, the cleanest marine fuel currently commercially available.

“MSC Euribia is named after the ancient goddess Eurybia who harnessed the winds, weather and constellations to master the seas, furthering the vision of the ship to master the deployment of state-of-the-art technologies to protect and preserve the precious marine ecosystem,” says MSC Cruises.
