Even though a day at the beach filled with activities and many people is enjoyable, you may sometimes want a secluded spot where you can relax without distractions. Here are five secret beaches in South Africa where you can find privacy and solitude.

1. MABIBI BEACH, KWAZULU-NATAL

One of South Africa’s top secret beaches is the tranquil Mabibi Beach in the heart of KwaZulu Natal. It is located in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Coastal forests shelter this secret beach and it is an ideal place for children to have fun. Snorkeling along the reef is a very popular activity. The waters are warm, clean, and pleasant to swim in.

2. PLATBOOM BEACH, CAPE POINT, WESTERN CAPE

The secluded Platboom Beach is situated about 65 km from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town. It is part of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts, offering plenty opportunities to capture the beauty of South Africa’s coastline.

3. MKAMBATI NATURE RESERVE BEACH, EASTERN CAPE

Mkambati Nature Reserve Beach is a secret beach that is only accessible by hiking or paddling. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil atmosphere, waterfalls cascading into the sea, and the Msikhaba River merging with the Indian Ocean.

4. ELANDS BAY, WEST COAST, WESTERN CAPE

Elands Bay on South Africa’s West Coast, has a special charm and a unique small-town character. Surfers especially enjoy this beach as well as enthusiastic bird watchers. In addition to being home to 232 species of birds, Elands Bay is covered in a blanket of blooming flowers during the spring months.

5. NOETZIE BEACH, KNYSNA, WESTERN CAPE

Noetzie is a secret beach to the east of Knysna, at the end of a gravel road. The lush forest of the Sinclair Nature Reserve borders it on one side. The fynbos landscapes of Pezula Resort Estate is on the other side. Accessing this beach requires a steep climb from the parking area down a narrow path and a flight of stairs into the cliff.

It is one of the last remaining homes in South Africa for the very rare African Black Oystercatcher and is therefore a conservancy. What makes this quaint hamlet one of the most special places in the Garden Route is the unique cluster of stone castles on the cliffs above the sand – resembling a fairy tale setting.
