Europe experiences extreme heatwave

Those making their way to Europe this northern hemisphere summer season, should be aware that the continent is currently experiencing record high temperatures with wildfires and several heat-related deaths having occurred in some countries.

According to Schengen.News, tourists have been warned to travel cautiously to Greece, Italy, Spain and several other popular EU destinations this summer.

Parts of some of these countries have been recording temperatures as high as 40C.

Due to the high temperatures in Greece, a number of tourists have even gone missing, and some even have been found dead as the temperatures in some parts of the country increased to 43C. This has been on the mainland as well as on several islands like Crete, Rhodes and Samos.

In Italy, the Ministry of Health has issued a Level Three alert, which is the highest level, for several cities, including Palermo and Rome, among others.

Tourists have been advised not to leave litter, especially glass, and make sure to properly extinguish cigarettes to avoid starting wildfires.

Scientists have said that the current heat is driven by climate change and El Nino in the Pacific, and the European heatwave is set to continue.

Still safe to travel?

Authorities have said that it is still safe to travel to these hot Europe spots, provided that tourists follow the advice issued by the local authorities and take all necessary precautions to be safe.

Travellers are advised to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
