Critically, over the festive season, the policy will identify passengers with non-compliant items before reaching the security checkpoint. Be aware that if you have non-compliant hand luggage, you will be directed back to your check-in counter to transfer it to check-in. Passengers who exceed the hand luggage limit will be subject to the specific airline’s excess baggage rules.

ACSA says the strict new hand luggage policy for SA is a preventative measure, flagging potentially illegal or hazardous items and combating criminal activities. But we all know it’s more aimed to limiting the amount of baggage travellers take on-board during a busy festive season.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Hand luggage in SA must adhere to the following:
- Economy-class passengers can have one bag plus one slimline laptop bag or handbag.
- First-class passengers are allowed two bags plus one slimline laptop bag or handbag.
- Bags may not exceed these dimensions: 56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm.
- Weight limit per bag: 7 kg.
*Note that a slimline laptop bag refers specifically to one that is a size and thickness to carry a laptop and charger. This does not include backpacks capable of carrying other items such as documents, clothes, etc.
