220 Tourism Safety Monitors officially deployed in Mpumalanga

The first of the Department of Tourism’s 2 300 Tourism Safety Monitors have been deployed in Hazyview, Mpumalanga.

As part of the National Tourism Safety Strategy, the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, deployed the first set of tourism monitors in Hazyview, Mpumalanga this week.

The Department of Tourism budgeted R174.5 million to train 2 305 tourism safety monitors in South Africa during this financial year, set to be deployed around the country at major tourist destinations.

According to Tourism Update, the key objectives of the programme will include enhancing tourism safety awareness at key tourism attractions, upskilling of unemployed youth and reducing tourist vulnerabilities.

The 220 tourism monitors deployed in Mpumalanga will be stationed at the following municipalities and sites:

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality:

  • Lowveld View,
  • God’s Window,
  • Pinnacle,
  • Berlin Falls,
  • Mac Falls,
  • Sabie Town,
  • Graskop Town,
  • Pilgrim’s Rest,
  • Gorge Lift, and
  • Lydenburg.

Nkomazi Municipality:

  • Lebombo Border Post and
  • Jeppe’s Reef Border Post.

Mbombela:

  • Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport
  • Hazyview municipality,
  • Albert Luthuli municipality,
  • Msukalingwe municipality, and
  • Emakhazeni municipality

As per tourism update, the remainder of the tourism monitors will be deployed as follows around the country:

  • 150 in the Eastern Cape
  • 150 in the Free State
  • 250 in the Western Cape
  • 100 in Gauteng
  • 100 in Limpopo
  • 200 in KwaZulu Natal
  • 100 in the North West
  • 70 in the Northern Cape
  • 200 at iSimangaliso Wetland Park
  • 150 at Ezemvelo Nature Reserve
  • 130 at SANBI Gardens
  • 135 at ACSA airports
  • 350 at different SANParks
