Instagram and Facebook outage frustrate users

Instagram, Facebook and Threads are down on Tuesday afternoon in what appears to be a global outage.

Outages were reported after 16:00, with more than 300,000 problems logged, according to Sky News.

Users trying to log onto the websites and apps were finding error messages and were unable to refresh their feeds as normal.

Tracking website Downdetector indicated hundreds of thousands of reported outages for Facebook and Instagram, affecting multiple countries including South Africa.

Meta has acknowledged its technical issues and said they were working on the problem.

“We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” the page says.

Meta’s communications officer Andy Stone posted: “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”

Users took to X(formerly Twitter) to share their struggles after failing to log into Facebook and Instagram.

“I thought FOR SURE someone hacked me and I had lost everything on Facebook and Instagram! Thanks, Twitter for clearing up that they are just not currently working! #facebook #instagram,” wrote @JmeSunSlave.
