International rugby returns with a bang this weekend with a full programme but Currie Cup action will also be on our screens in a real festival of rugby.

The Currie Cup Premier Division gets underway on Friday 5 July.

CURRIE CUP ACTION ON TV THIS WEEKEND

On Friday afternoon the beaten finalists from last season, the Pumas, travel to Kimberley to take on Griquas from 15:00.

Later in the evening, the Sharks host the Lions at Kings Park with kick-off scheduled for 17:15.

On Friday there are also international matches between Samoa and Italy as well as Georgia hosting Fiji.

SATURDAY

Aside from the full programme of internationals on Saturday there will also be one Currie Cup match in the mix.

It is a Free State derby as the Cheetahs host the Griffons in Bloemfontein in a match that kicks off at 13:30.

Of course, there are huge international matches on Saturday with New Zealand hosting England, Australia taking on Wales and the Springboks in battle against Ireland.

SUNDAY

On Sunday the Currie Cup’s opening weekend rounds off with a clash between the two most successful teams in the history of the competition.

Western Province will face the Bulls at the Cape Town Stadium from 15:00.

Former Western Province stalwart Nizaam Carr has been named as the Bulls skipper for the Currie Cup.

CARR-LED BULLS IN ACTION ON SUNDAY

Head coach Phiwe Nomlomo says ‘Nemo’ strikes the perfect balance between the young and the more experienced players in the group.

“When you look at the mixture of the squad, we have youth mixed with some experienced players and Nemo becomes the all-important cog for us because he can relate to both sides of the age groups. When you look at the mixture of our leadership group, Nizaam also brings a measured balance there as well and I am sure that they will collectively share the responsibilities over the next few weeks,” Nomlomo said.

“He is also a player that offers us seasoned experience having played in top competitions locally and abroad, which I am confident has given him plenty of lessons that will enable him to lead us for this campaign.”

All Currie Cup Premier Division matches will be broadcast on Supersport.
