Sundowns break Esperance jinx with CAF Champions League win
Mamelodi Sundowns broke their long-standing jinx against Esperance with a 1-0 win in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals, securing a crucial first-leg advantage.

Mamelodi Sundowns made history on Tuesday night with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Esperance in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The result marked Sundowns’ first-ever win over the Tunisian giants, breaking a long-standing jinx between the two sides in continental competition.
A crucial second-half strike from Peter Shalulile proved to be the difference, giving Sundowns a valuable advantage ahead of next week’s decisive second leg in Tunis. The goal not only put the Tshwane giants in the driving seat for a semifinal spot but also exorcised the ghosts of last season when Esperance eliminated them from the tournament.
Historic triumph in CAF Champions League clash
Heading into this encounter, Sundowns had never beaten Esperance in four previous meetings, with the North African powerhouse winning three and drawing one. Given this track record, Tuesday’s win was significant for the South African champions, especially in front of their home supporters.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, who previously worked with Esperance, seemed to have used his inside knowledge to craft a well-executed game plan. His tactical approach frustrated Esperance and ensured Sundowns took a crucial step toward the semifinals.
Key battle still lies ahead
Despite the historic victory, Sundowns are aware that the job is far from over. They must now navigate a challenging second leg in Tunisia, where Esperance will be desperate to overturn the deficit. A place in the semifinals is at stake, with the winner set to face either Al Ahly or Al-Hilal in the next round.
Starting XI: Mamelodi Sundowns vs Esperance

Esperance XI: Ben Said, Tougai, Bouchniba, Konate, Ben Hamida, Jelassi, Yan Sasse, Mokwana, Belaili, Guenichi, Ogbelu.
With a hard-earned victory behind them, Sundowns will now turn their attention to defending their lead in hostile territory, aiming to secure a coveted semifinal berth in the CAF Champions League.
