South Africa’s Lloyd Harris set for R3.5 million payday

South Africa’s Lloyd Harris could bag himself a wopping R3,5 million if he can beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz on Thursday.

South Africa’s Lloyd Harris is set to face world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open following his win over Argentine Guido Pella.

Harris could bag himself a whopping $191,000 (approximately R3,5 million)if he beats Alcaraz on Thursday.

The US Open has the biggest prize money purse of any professional tennis event in the world at the moment.

The winners of the singles competitions will take home an incredible $3 million while those who lose the championship match will be consoled with a cold hard $1.5 million.

Players reaching the Round of 16 get $284,000, quarterfinalists bag $455,000 and semi-finalists will be awarded $775,000.

Harris is out to climb back up the rankings following a 2023 season disrupted by injury.

The meeting with Alcaraz will be his first against the Spaniard who will drop the world No 1 tag after the US Open.

Alcaraz himself gained the second round at Flushing Meadows thanks to a quick win over Dominic Koepfer. Koepfer was forced to retire just over an hour into the clash with Alcaraz leading by a set and 3-2.

“That’s not the best way to get through into another round,” said Alcaraz. “But I have to say on my side I was playing great.”

The top seed has won 54 matches on tour already this season and suffered just six losses.

Alcaraz is the defending champion in New York and is locked in an epic battle with Novak Djokovic for the top spot as well as the big honours up for grabs.
