South Africans defend Bongi’s alleged ‘racial slur’
There’s been an outcry from South Africans following Tom Curry’s allegation…
South African rugby fans have rushed to defend Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi, who has been accused of using a racial slur against England’s flanker Tom Curry during the Rugby World Cup (RWC) semi-final on Saturday night in Paris.
It is alleged that Bongi called him a “white c**t” BUT according to Bok supporters, Bongi was speaking Afrikaans and said “wit kant” referring to England’s side.
Springbok Rugby Blog said: “Bongi tuned ‘wit kant‘ – which as we all know was to alert the #Springboks we lost the ruck and the ball was now on England’s side. Why doesn’t the Daily Mail and the rest of the English media learn a bit of Afrikaans before attacking a good man’s name?”
However the matter has been taken “extremely seriously” by RWC, and it has launched a formal investigation.
Tom reported the incident to referee Ben O’Keeffe during the first half of the match. If Bongi is found guilty and banned, he will not be able to play in the RWC final against New Zealand at Stade de France this coming weekend.
According to the BBC, Bongi refused to shake Tom’s hand at the end of the match (which South Africa won 15-14).
SA Rugby has reportedly said: “We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence. We will engage with Bongi if anything is found to substantiate the claim.”
Former SA expat and staunch Springbok supporter, SA Meme Girl, says: “Almal het a kant they must kies 😂 Just my private 2 cents – anyone knows that we South Africans don’t swear using the c-word, we say po*s 😂.”
