Sharks add Trevor Nyakane to their signing spree
The Sharks are said to have dug deep into their pockets for RWC winning Springboks veteran forward, Trevor Nyakane.
The Sharks have made yet another major acquisition, confirming the signing of World Cup-winning prop Trevor Nyakane. The veteran forward will relocate from Paris to bolster the Sharks’ front row next season.
Nyakane, 34, has enjoyed a successful three-year stint with Racing 92 in France, but the club opted against renewing his contract. Despite interest from his former team, the Bulls, Nyakane has ultimately chosen to join the Sharks.
SHARKS DIG DEEP FOR TREVOR NYAKANE
The Sharks’ recent transfer activity has been characterized by significant investment as the team aims to transform their fortunes next season. Nyakane’s signing underscores their determination to build a more competitive squad.
Nyakane is expected to inject much-needed experience into the Sharks’ youthful front row. His illustrious career began with the Cheetahs, where he featured in both Super Rugby and Currie Cup competitions, before joining the Bulls in 2014.
A SPRINGBOK LEGEND
His international debut for South Africa came in June 2013 against Italy in Durban, entering the match as a loosehead prop replacement for Tendai Mtawarira in the 73rd minute.
Nyakane, renowned for his scrummaging versatility, secured a spot in the Springboks’ 2019 World Cup squad but was forced to withdraw due to injury during the pool stages. South Africa went on to claim the coveted trophy, defeating England in the final.
NYAKANE’S LEADERSHIP ROLE
In 2020, Nyakane was appointed vice-captain of the Bulls and played a pivotal role in their Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup triumphs that season. The following year, he earned a place in South Africa’s 46-man squad assembled for the British and Irish Lions Tour, playing in the South Africa A team’s narrow 17-13 victory over Warren Gatland’s side.
After amassing 82 caps for the Bulls over six years, Nyakane embarked on a new chapter in France with Racing 92 in December 2021. His international career continued to flourish, culminating in a key role in South Africa’s thrilling 2023 World Cup victory.
