SAFA backs Hugo Broos to 2026
SAFA President, Danny Jordaan has come out in support of Bafana coach Hugo Broos, backing him through to 2026
It wasn’t all that long ago that critics of Bafana Bafana and Hugo Broos had real doubts that the national team would even do enough to qualify for the Afcon tournament.
However, after overcoming that hurdle, Broos’ charges defied the pre-tournament expectations to progress all the way to the semi-final stage, where they agonisingly lost on penalties to Nigeria.
OPINION | It’s time to move on from Percy Tau
Although Bafana Bafana will still hope to come out on top in the third-place playoff, attention has quickly shifted to whether Hugo Broos will opt to move on, or receive backing to continue in the top job.
SAFA BACKS HUGO BROOS
Speaking to SABC Sport on Metro FM in Abidjan, SAFA president, Jordaan has now clearly explained why they want to fully back Broos to continue building on what he has started.
“I have a meeting with him after the match on Saturday, and we want to encourage him to keep on building the team,” said Jordaan. “I think we must all support him because we can see what he has put together…
“Absolutely we want him to stay on (but) we have to fix the issues between him and the PSL.”

HUGO BROOS PROVIDES HINTS ABOUT BAFANA BAFANA FUTURE
“First of all I never said that I should stop – I never said it,” he told journalists, as quoted by iDiski Times. “It was only when you talk about my age and then I think it’s normal that you think about ‘yeah, maybe it’s time that I’m going to stop’.
“But I never said that I’m going to stop or that I stop. So again I’m very happy in my job as I said a few days ago. The guys give me a lot of satisfaction, a lot. I’m proud as a coach to be a coach of that team.
QUESTION | Will Hugo Broos retire after Afcon?
Bafana Bafana will take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in that battle for the bronze medal after the second semi-final saw hosts Ivory Coast eke out a narrow 1-0 win over DR Congo.
The third-place playoff will take place on Saturday, 10 February at 22:00 (SA time).
The final is scheduled for exactly 24 hours later.
