Ronwen Williams not bothered by stats ahead of Nigeria clash

Bafana Bafana skipper Ronwen Williams says he is unfazed by statistics against the Super Eagles of Nigeria who are beatable.

As a skipper, Williams will lead Bafana to the eagerly anticipated Afcon semi-final clash against Nigeria, saying he is unfazed by past results and statistics are part of history.

The Bafana hero in the previous match against Cape Verde, Williams states that their quest is to focus on the future as they meet a beatable Nigeria on Wednesday night.
Judging previous results, Bafana have lost all the Afcon games against the West Africans, Nigeria but the Mamelodi Sundowns deputy skipper, Williams remains unfazed by the statistics.

The seasoned keeper, Williams who has kept four clean sheets at the ongoing Afcon tournament says the statistics don’t play the game and they want to change the future.
“Stats don’t play the game. There were so many stats that were against us in this tournament and we proved that they don’t play the match,” an unfazed Bafana skipper Williams said about Nigeria’s statistics.
“What happened in the past, we can’t change, but what we can change is tomorrow’s results and performance.

“We are just proud as a team to be in the semi-finals. We’ve worked so hard in the last few years. We come a long way as a country and as a team.
“So, we don’t look at that because we can control what is in front of us, which is the results.”

In addition, the former SuperSport United skipper, Williams made it clear Bafana want to prove their critics wrong as they were not given a chance.
On their path to the Afcon semi-finals, Bafana downed Cape Verde, Morocco, and Namibia, drew against Tunisia but lost to Mali – and an unfazed Williams is confident of beating Nigeria.
“I’m just proud to be at this stage. Not many people believed in us, but we believed in ourselves and what we have done in the last few years,” added the Bafana skipper, Williams ahead of the clash against Nigeria.
“We showed that it is possible and we are looking forward to the game. We are excited. We’ve done our analyses and we are looking forward to the game.

“It is going to be a big one. Obviously, there is a big rivalry between the two countries and they are obviously the team that knocked us out the last time we were at Afcon in 2019.
“So, there is a lot at stake, a lot to play for and we are really looking forward to the game.
“We are looking forward to the challenge. It is going to be tough, but we have been facing similar players throughout the tournament and I think our defence has been rock solid.”
