Riveiro on AmaZulu draw, sends warning to Sundowns

Despite the goalless draw against AmaZulu, Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro sends a warning to Mamelodi Sundowns.

In the wake of their goalless draw against AmaZulu on Tuesday night, Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro sends a strong warning to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates were targeting the full three points and to close the gap on DStv Premiership log leaders, Sundowns but they fired blanks.

Despite that disappointing result, the Spaniard is confident they can still close the gap on Masandawana.

As things stand, Sundowns lead Pirates by 16 points but they have two games in hand compared to the log leaders.

The Buccaneers failed to replicate their cup form in the league but the coach, Riveiro it’s too early o panic as they have played six league matches so far.

Having clinched the MTN8 and are tipped as favourites to lift the Carling Knockout Cup, the Soweto giants are yet to convince as far as the league title is concerned.

Pirates have only secured two out of six league games, they have suffered as many losses including the number of draws.

“Six games? Are we going to do an analysis of our campaign in the league after six games? Be patient…there’s still a long way to go,” Riveiro said.

“We are performing better than what the log is saying in terms of points and you will see it soon.

“Today we collected one point away, we have to be positive.

“It’s one point that will help us continue but I know that this is not a nil-nil performance but this is football it [drawing games] happens but we have to avoid it from happening too frequently.”

PIRATES COACH SATISFIED WITH APPROACH VS. AMAZULU

The reigning Nedbank Cup champion, Riveiro expressed satisfaction from the dull draw against Usuthu at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“I have a feeling that we were in full control of the game in the early stages. The amount of interruptions,” he adds.

“I am not used to saying anything about it but I think today was too much, affecting our rhythm.

“Their goalkeeper [Mothwa]…I think was injured the whole 90 minutes, I hope he’s getting better.

“In the end, these types of scenarios are not good for football…in the end, we got five minutes extra time in the first half and six minutes in the second half.”
