Two Oceans Marathon organisers have confirmed the tragic death of 2023 Half Marathon champion, Mbuleli Mathanga, who was found dead in the early hours of Thursday morning.
He was 29.

Mathanga won April’s race in Cape Town in a time of 1:03:58.

In a Facebook post, the organisers of the 21.1km race expressed their heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, running mates, and Phantane club mates, adding that their thoughts and prayers were with them at this deeply challenging time.
‘We remember Mbuleli in his triumph as an extraordinary winner who inspired all who knew him with his unwavering passion for the sport of road running and his unfailing commitment to always giving of his best,’ they concluded.

Mathanga, who was reportedly found dead in his home in Ndwedwe, was also the KwaZulu-Natal 5 000m and 10 000m record holder.
He leaves behind a young son and daughter.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
