Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star Siphiwe Mkhonza has died, reportedly after a battle with illness.

He was 44.

Mkhonza began his professional football career at Bloemfontein Celtic, before going on to play for Ria Stars and Golden Arrows.

SIPHIWE MKHONZA HAD A MEMORABLE STINT AT KAIZER CHIEFS

The defender then spent three years at Kaizer Chiefs, featuring in over 40 games.

In his first season he formed part of a victorious squad that won the league title in the 2004/2005 Premier Soccer League campaign.

It was also during this time that he received a call-up to Bafana Bafana, featuring on seven occasions for the national side.

After leaving Kaizer Chiefs, the centre back had brief spells at SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards before hanging up his boots.

In recent years, Mkhonza served as a broadcast analyst with SABC.

He had been with SABC Sports since 2013, having introduced himself to viewers on Laduma before moving to Soccer Zone.
