Orlando Pirates to bid for ex-Kaizer Chiefs player
Orlando Pirates are following the progress of Darrel Matsheke and are interested in his services.
Orlando Pirates are looking to revamp their squad having lined up a former Kaizer Chiefs player as a key target.
Pirates are preparing to let go of a few players next transfer window, with incomings also in the offing.
In the last window, Pirates sold and released the duo of Thembinkosi Lorch and Bienvenu Eva Nga. The two ended up at Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United respectfully. The likes of Cameroonian striker Soauibou Marou as well as Ghana international goalkeeper Richard Ofori survived but could still leave. Pirates have also been linked with a few incomings including long-term targets in Namibian left back Riaan Hanamub and Shaune Mogaila. But a surprise name was also recently added to that list in the form of Darrel Matsheke.
Matsheke had only just joined Stellenbosch as a free agent on a one-year deal, after he was released by Kaizer Chiefs. The midfielder starred for Amakhosi’s reserve side, before impressing enough to earn his senior debut under then coach Gavin Hunt, during the 2020/21 season, a campaign the club ended up giving a few academy players an opportunity due to a FIFA transfer ban imposed on the club.
Matsheke had a promising start to life at Chiefs but quickly fell out of favour with Hunt, and was loaned out the next campaign. He never made it back to club. Stellies decided to offer him a short-term deal and he has since impressed at the Cape Winelands side. His performances even went as far as catching the eye of Pirates. Not too long ago, it was rumoured that they were looking at signing the player, and it seemed like it would be a straightforward deal to do then.
PIRATES TO PRESS AHEAD WITH MATSHEKE DEAL
It was reported that Stellenbosch are looking to deal Pirates a blow by extending Matsheke’s deal for a further year. It now appears, however, that the Buccaneers are far from deterred by that according to Soccer-Laduma.
“Orlando Pirates are following the progress of Darrel Matsheke and are interested in his services. He is one of the targets for the club to strengthen their midfield for next season. You can expect the club to make a move for the player at the end of the season,”. Said the source.
Stellenbosch have not indicated yet whether they will take up the deal to extend Matsheke’s deal. Pirates, however, seem determined to sign the former Chiefs star regardless.
