Orlando Pirates are planning big squad changes
Orlando Pirates are ready to take a bold decision with regards to their current squad and possible signings in the next transfer window.
Orlando Pirates are already planning for the next season, with both incomings and outgoings in focus.
Pirates made a number of signings during the off-season, as well as the January transfer window.
They signed Melusi Buthelezi from TS Galaxy, Siphelo Baloni from All Stars FC and Katlego Otladisa from Marumo Gallants. They were joined by Karim Kimvuidi, Lesedi Kapinga and Patrick Maswanganyi. Then, in January, Pirates added the duo of Thabiso Lebitso and Thalenthe Mbatha. In January, stalwart Thembinkosi Lorch and Bienvenu Eva Nga both left the club for Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United respectfully.
Those players are expected to be followed out of the exit door by a few more in the coming window. The likes of Zakhele Lepasa, Souaibou Marou, and Sandile Mthethwa are among those touted for a Pirates exit.
According to FARPost Pirates are ready to learn from the mistakes of the past and reduce their signings. They are also thought to be determined to trim their current squad ahead of next season.
PIRATES PLANNING SQUAD REDUCTION
“Sources close to the club (Pirates) suggest the management is considering a drastic reduction in squad size to improve team dynamics and on-field results. The Buccaneers’ current roster boasts a hefty 37 players. This large number has allegedly caused difficulties for the coaching staff, hindering their ability to provide focused training and maintain optimal management. As a result, the 1995 CAF Champions League winners are exploring a reduction in the squad size for next season. The idea, according to sources, is to gradually streamline to a manageable number, with all competitions in mind.” Wrote the publication.
CLOSE TO 20 PLAYERS TO BE SHOWN THE DOOR?
There are currently 10 players who will see their contracts coming to an end in June. Pirates will have to make some important decisions on some. Others have options in their respective deals, while others could have to renegotiate or walk away completely. The players on this list are as follows. Siyabonga Mpontshane, Mthethwa, Fortune Makaringe, Thabang Monare, Richard Ofori, Kermit Erasmus, Deon Hotto, Olisa Ndah, Makhehlene Makhaula, and Tshegofatso Mabasa.
There is also the curious case of Goodman Mosele, who is on loan to Chippa. Right back Bandile Shandu has also been linked with an exit to the Eastern Cape side. Baloni and Otladisa have not seen much in terms of game time and could be loaned out too. Left-back Bongani Sam, is currently an outcast and could also finally leave Pirates.
Pirates will also have to make a decision on Thalenthe Mbatha who is on loan from SuperSport United. Early indications are that Pirates will take up their option to sign him on a permanent deal. They’re also likely to take up a two-year option on Mabasa due to his form.
Finally, strike duo Lepasa and Marou do not seem to be valued at Pirates and could be part of the mass exodus.
