How many teams are eager to face Orlando Pirates in South Africa right now? Probably not so many. The Sea Robbers have been flying high in 2024.

ORLANDO PIRATES SEAL FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

After a rocky end to 2023 with that 3-1 loss to SuperSport United and 3-2 defeat to Stellenbosch FC, Orlando Pirates came back in 2024 eager to reclaim respect. Besides the thrilling 3-2 win over bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby in March, April has been the best month so far.

In a run of four matches unbeaten with 16 goals scored, Orlando Pirates smashed Golden Arrows 7-1, AmaZulu 4-2 in the Nedbank Cup, as well as 1-0 in the DStv Premiership, before putting Royal AM to the swod with a 4-0 beating on Sunday in Pietermaritzburg. The results placed the Soweto giants in the Nedbank Cup semifinals and cemented third place in the league with six more matches remaining.

LOOMING GOODBYE TO SOUAUBOU MAROU

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Cameroonian striker Souaibou Marou arrived with much excitement after representing the Indomitable Lions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Sadly, the towering center forward has only made four appearances with zero goals at Orlando Pirates.

According to his agent Mike Makaab, Marou will be found a new team in the DStv Premiership or the African continent next season.

“The biggest possibility with Marou is that we will find him a new club at the end of the season because it’s a bit disappointing that he’s not playing,” Makaab told FARPost.

“Orlando Pirates would not have signed him if he wasn’t a good player. Maybe his style of play doesn’t fit the team. I mean, he became the top goal scorer in Cameroon when he came here, and he was the only local-based player for Cameroon at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“Given the opportunity, he might have proven what he does because he’s a prolific striker, so we will look both in the DStv Premiership and on the African continent for his next move,” Makaab added.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates will be travelling to the Western Cape and Eastern Cape this week. First will be a visit to Cape Town City on Wednesday at 15:00, before a trip to Chippa United on Saturday at 15:00 for the Nedbank Cup semifinals.
