Mystery Malcolm Marx injury: What do we know?

Of all the setbacks the Springboks would have wanted to avoid, an injury to Malcolm Marx would have been at the top of the list.

On Wednesday, just as the Springboks unveiled an innovative new-look team to face Romania this Sunday, news came to light that Malcolm Marx had picked up an injury in training.

Although Marx was never going to feature against Romania, he has now been sent for scans to determine the extent of the injury.

NOT MUCH HAS BEEN REVEALED ABOUT THE MALCOLM MARX INJURY

Notably, the Springboks never mentioned what sort of injury it was, but we do know that the results of the scan should be known on Thursday.

“Malcolm wasn’t selected for this game, so that doesn’t change anything in terms of the selection of this particular game,” coach Jacques Nienaber commented.

“I’m not 100 percent sure, but I don’t think we’re allowed to give out medical information about a player. It’ll be better to talk to him, or he gives the doctor the green light, who is probably in a better space to talk and will know more than I do.”

In a worst case scenario that sees Marx ruled out of the World Cup if the injury proves to be serious, it’s worth noting that the Springboks would need to call up a specialist hooker to replace him.

With just Bongi Mbonambi left as the only other recognised hooker in the squad, the Springboks would be expected to call up Joseph Dweba, who is on the stand by list.

Reminder: The only way Pollard and others could join Springboks
