It has been widely reported that Sundowns have already agreed a deal worth R46 million to land the signature of Esquivel, who will have to take a foreign spot in his registration.

Esquivel will be arriving from Argentinian side Club Atletico Lanus this January and the player might have to take the place of his compatriot Junior Mendieta, if he is to be registered, according to Soccer-Laduma.

“Indications are that with the impending arrival of the highly-rated Esquivel, Downs are negotiating with Stellenbosch FC to loan the player back to the Winelands. This publication has been informed that loaning out Mendieta, if both parties agree to push the deal over the line during the open transfer window period, could result in the Chloorkop-based side paying a portion of his salary. However, this would result in Mendieta being unable to face his parent club whenever the two teams come up against each other.” Wrote the publication.

It would be very disappointing on the part of both Sundowns and Mendieta if he is to be the one sacrificed for Esquivel. That is because, it was well publicised that Masandawana beat off strong competition from their rivals and both Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates for the playmaker’s services. Since moving to Pretoria from Stellenbosch FC, the player has only featured five times for his new club, with the bulk of those appearances coming from the bench.

In fairness to Mendieta though, he has also had his injury problems since moving to Sundowns, and maybe a move back to familiar territory in Stellenbosch could be exactly what he needs to get back into a rhythm. Should he do well there, you would believe the Brazilians would be happy to have him back, after finding a long-term solution.
