In 1994 Lucas Radebe and Philemon “Chippa” Masinga moved to Leeds United in the English Premier league, but Radebe wasn’t Leeds’ main target.

In 1994 Lucas Radebe and Philemon “Chippa” Masinga moved to Leeds United in the English Premier league, but Radebe wasn’t Leeds’ main target.

According to Wikipedia, Masinga’s agent Marcelo Houseman made a deal with Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson at the time. In addition to the Masinga’s transfer from Mamelodi Sundowns to Leeds, Houseman made a deal for Radebe to play in the Premier League.

The central defender was 25 years 02 months 19 days at the time of his move and cost the Premier League time just £250 000 or €375 000 according to Transfermarkt.

The pair of South Africans were unveiled on September 6, 1994 and Radebe’s career at Leeds spanned 10 years. He retired in the 2005/2006 season after making 254 appearances for the Yorkshire club. He could also play left-back and as a defensive midfielder.

Lucas Radebe was handed the captain’s armband by George Graham and made a huge impact at the club. He only managed to score two goals but his resilience and leadership was second to none.

Lucas Radebe captained South Africa at the 1998 World Cup in France and was awarded the FIFA FairPlay award in 2000.
