Kaizer Chiefs: Who is Mfundo “Obrigado” Vilakazi?

Kaizer Chiefs’ rising star, Mfundo Vilakazi, recently took part in a first-team training session in preparation for the upcoming DStv Premiership clash against Richards Bay, signalling his potential transition to the senior squad.

The young midfielder has been turning heads in both the DStv Diski Challenge and recent youth tournaments, heightening expectations for his breakthrough into the senior ranks.

Having successfully completed his schooling, Vilakazi’s integration into the first team appears to be in full swing, as he actively participated in a Thursday afternoon session alongside senior players. 

This development is certain to elate the Amakhosi faithful, who have already embraced the talented player, affectionately known as ‘Obrigado,’ even prior to his official debut.

BUT WHO EXACTLY IS MFUNDO VILAKAZI?

Kaizer Chiefs secured the services of this promising midfielder from Doornkop Students FC, a move that gained attention following his stellar performances at the Philly’s Games. 

Despite his past involvement with Kaizer Chiefs’ academy, Vilakazi was not formally tied to the club during the specific Philly’s Games that garnered him widespread recognition on social media.

Representing Doornkop Students of Snake Park, Soweto, Vilakazi stood out during the games in Tembisa, although his team was eliminated in the semi-finals of the annual tournament. 

While previously part of the Kaizer Chiefs development Under-17 team in 2021, he wasn’t professionally contracted to the club, allowing him the flexibility to sign with any team.

In a competitive race for his signature, Kaizer Chiefs emerged victorious, securing Vilakazi’s talents and signing him to a professional contract. 

The diminutive midfielder swiftly joined the Glamour Boys’ Diski Challenge team, fueling anticipation among fans for his official debut with the first team. 

Kaizer Chiefs supporters are now eagerly awaiting his long-awaited debut for the senior team, adding an extra layer of excitement to Vilakazi’s promising journey so far.
