Kaizer Chiefs may be between long-term coaches right now but their interest in young star Tashreeq Matthews has not cooled.

A source within the club says that the coaching changes have not cooled the desire to bring the player into Naturena.

Kaizer Chiefs have had little success when it comes to luring promising young stars back to South Africa.

Previous attempts to get Thabo Cele back in the PSL fell flat and it seems a lot of work would need to be done to make Kaizer Chiefs attractive to a player like Matthews.

From Matthews point of view, a move to Kaizer Chiefs right now would appear to be a clear and obvious backwards step despite the status of the club.

It seems the new coach will need to make a call on the pursuit of Matthews and even then the chances of bringing him in appear slim.

“You remember we talked about Tashreeq (Matthews) before? The club had continued to monitor him with the main aim of bringing him on board,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“But that was with a different technical team. The scouting and the sporting department work hard with the technical team but they want the new coach to have a say on which players he wants in the team.

“So for now only the new coach will determine whether Tashreeq is signed or not but as a team in general they are interested in his services.”

CAN THEY MAKE NATURENA ATTRACTIVE?

For the time being it seems Matthews remains on the short list but despite their interest it would be a big surprise if he signs for Kaizer Chiefs any time soon.

“As much as the new coach will determine the signing of Tashreeq Matthews he will also be looking at which players the team needs to keep or release so I think it will happen during the transfer window period in January,” the source adds.

“Or it could be in July around the off season time (for Matthews’ signing). What I can tell you though is that Tashreeq Matthews is still on the clubs wanted list as it stands now.”
