Kaizer Chiefs need Pitso Mosimane now more than ever

Kaizer Chiefs have denied reports they had been in talks with Pitso Mosimane but the club’s search for a permanent coach is not over.

Earlier this year, some reports suggested that Chiefs had tabled an offer to Pitso Mosimane and his representatives, but Kaizer Chiefs bosses insisted this was in fact “fake news”.

It all came in the wake of Chiefs’ search for a permanent coach to take over from interim manager Cavin Johnson.

Since then, Mosimane has signed a contract with the Saudi Pro League side, the Abha Club. Yet it should be noted that this is only a short-term deal, and although there is of course a strong possibility that the veteran coach could stay on, there is no clarity around this just yet.

In his previous jobs, Mosimane was reported to earn around R3-million per month at Al Wahda and Al Ahli, and understandably it’s led to a feeling that there is simply no way for Chiefs to afford the revered coach.

However, the 59-year-old has always said he would be willing to consider any project as long as he was aligned with the vision of the club and that they were able to agree on the best way forward.

Just this past weekend Chiefs suffered a shock Nedbank Cup last 32 defeat to minnows Milford FC, which effectively resulted in what will turn out to be a ninth season without a significant trophy for the Glamour Boys.

Something has to be done to reverse the current fortunes of the club, and return to Amakhosi to their former glory days. Quite simply, Chiefs have to find a way to lure Mosimane from Abha FC to Naturena.

If this means they have to break the bank, sell players or find a third party investor, then they should be doing everything in their power to make it happen.

Ultimately, if they can also ‘sell’ the project of turning Chiefs back into title contenders, Mosimane may view this as a challenge that could appeal to him and his team, and also bring him back home to South Africa.

“The Chiefs management was happy to hear that Pitso (Mosimane) has signed a short-term deal with that club from Saudi Arabia,” a source recently told The Citizen. “Kaizer (Motaung) senior ias a fan of Pitso and when he said some time ago that only two local coaches could coach Chiefs, one of those coaches he was talking about was Pitso.”

There is further substance to this, with Soccer Laduma now also reporting that Chiefs could line up negotiations during this period while Mosimane is on duty in Saudi.

“The deal between Chiefs and coach Pitso is a positive move and they will have a chance to get him at the start of next season,” a source was quoted as saying. “Pitso has signed a six-month contract and that’s what gives them hope that their talks could yield results. They believe in Mosimane.”

“Great to be back on the pitch,” he wrote on X. “An exciting new journey ahead … Ready to put in the work necessary to elevate the team. Thank you to the President and the Boards for [entrusting] me with this responsibility. With our supporters behind us, inshallah we will build something special.”

WOULD PITSO BE INTERESTED?

Even before the end of last year, Mosimane effectively ruled out the possibility of coaching an African club any time soon, despite Chiefs being on the look out.

However, it remains to be seen whether some nifty negotiation could see Pitso have a change of heart.
