Kaizer Chiefs might lose Edson Castillo after just one season
Kaizer Chiefs are fighting off interest in their Venezuelan midfielder, Edson Castillo who was a standout performer this season.
Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be fighting off interest in key midfielder Edson Castillo, after just one season at Naturena.
Castillo was Chiefs’ standout performer during the first half of the season, adjusting well to the local league.
The Venezuelan joined Chiefs from Monagas SC and hit the ground running for Chiefs. The 29-year-old has been a mainstay in the clubs midfield, both in defence and attack. His box-to-box nature has seen him make some big tackles, telling passes and even arrive late to score himself. Castillo has already bagged five goals in all competitions for the club so far.
His performances have caught more than just the eye of the South African football fraternity, with some continental rivals also rumoured to be interested in taking Castillo away from Chiefs. Earlier this year, this publication reported that Zamalek wanted the player. It was then established that Amakhosi want a whopping R40 million for him. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, the Egyptian giants have not been deterred.
ZAMALEK READY TO RAMP UP CHASE FOR KAIZER CHIEFS STAR
“It looks like Zamalek are very serious about Edson (Castillo). At Erst it was just monitoring and inquiring but now it’s apparently believed that they have contacted Chiefs to talk about the possible move. But yet, there has been contact from Zamalek. Now it’s all up to Chiefs to make a decision.” Said the source.
It has not been the best of periods for Castillo at Chiefs. The midfielder has looked a shadow of his former self. He has not played with the same energy and quality his displayed in the first half of the season. He has also hardly looked like a goal threat. To further compound his misery, he also missed the crucial penalty that saw them knocked out of the Nedbank Cup.
Having just returned from international duty, Castillo will have a few days more of rest, due to a suspension. Accumulated yellow cards will see him sit out the away game to Cape Town City.
