In tragic news, Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs was killed in a botched hijacking on Wednesday night.
Fleurs was yet to make his Amakhosi debut, having signed for the club in October last year.
The former SA Under-23 defender joined Kaizer Chiefs on a free transfer after being released by SuperSport United.
Fleurs’s departure from Matsatsantsa came in rather mysterious circumstances, having just signed a long-term extension.
That extension was supposed to fend off interest from Kaizer Chiefs, who had been eyeing him on a free transfer.
However, in a strange twist, the player ended up being released.
Although it seems as if he was always destined to be a Glamour Boy, he was yet to break through.
During the recent Afcon break, Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson hinted that Fleurs was edging closer to his debut.
He was not involved in match day squads in games Royal AM and the embarrassing Nedbank Cup exit to Milford FC.
He then made his first bench appearance for the club in the victory over Golden Arrows, but was not called upon to make his debut.
According to multiple reports, Fleurs was tragically killed in a hijacking gone wrong.
Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the news on their social media pages by putting out the following statement:
“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course. May his dear soul rest in peace,” Kaizer Chiefs wrote on their X account.
FOOTBALL JOURNEY
Fleurs started his football journey at Ubuntu Academy development.
He was then spotted by SuperSport United.
It did not take long for him to adapt and prove his worth to Matsatsantsa.
Despite his young age, he quickly became a regular and it was then no surprise that he was selected for the SA Under-23 side for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
He would then earn a dream move to Kaizer Chiefs.
He was just 24 at the time of his death.
The SAPeople website extends its heartfelt condolences to Fleurs’s family and friends.
May his soul rest in peace.
