Kaizer Chiefs are still in the market for a new permanent coach, with a few names already in the hat.

Chiefs parted ways with Molefi Ntseki after a dismal start to the campaign, replacing him with Cavin Johnson.

Too the majority of the Chiefs fan base, Ntseki was already an unpopular appointment, with no positive track record. Prior to taking over the first team reigns, he had never coached a senior professional side. He did, however, coach Bafana Bafana after Stuart Baxter, before being fired for failing to qualify for AFCON 2021. The duo reunited as part of a new structure at Amakhosi, which put him in charge of football development.

Ntseki did not last long as Chiefs coach, however, being sacked before even the halfway mark of the season. This came after an unconvincing start to the campaign which also saw them knocked out of two cups. After being relieved of his duties, the club appointed Johnson to take over on an interim basis. Coincidently, Johnson also came into the club in a developmental role, before being asked to steady the senior ship.

MORE THAN JUST THE TWO CANDIDATES LINKED TO THE JOB?

Johnson has seemed to have the desired effect, eventually winning three of his last four games of 2023. Those also featured three clean sheets in a row and a point in the last game against Sekhukhune United. That form has earned him the reins until the end of the season, there after Chiefs will make a permanent appointment. With the likes of Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mngqithi being banded about, another shock candidate was recently added.

That came in the form of veteran coach Mushin Ertugral. Of course he would come as no stranger to Chiefs fans, having had two trophy-laden spell with their club. Speaking to FARPost on the possibility of a return to the DStv Premiership, he wasn’t convinced.

ERTUGRAL RULES HIMSELF OUT OF KAIZER CHIEFS MOVE

“At the moment, no [on returning to the coaching scene in SA]. But I won’t rule out anything, you never know in the near future, I’m very busy with a great job that I have currently in the Emirates, and it makes me very happy. I have a couple of projects like in Abu Dhabi at Baniyas Sports. But I would love to coach, be back again because I was never away. I was with the Turkish Football national team not long ago as the head of technical and we had the [FIFA] World Cup and European qualifiers. But I would love to coach a team from the beginning of the season so I can prepare the team.” Said Ertugral.

He went on to confirm that he had offers in the PSL, further fuelling the Chiefs rumours.

“Out of respect to my fellow coaches, I can’t reveal the PSL clubs that have approached me with offers. I’m not that type of person. I also have offers internationally and in my country [Turkey] and Egypt, but we will see.” Ertugral.

It would come as a shock if Chiefs were to consider Ertugral, instead of looking for a coach with modern ideas.
