Congratulations to Durbanite Jordy Smith who has surfed his way into second place at the 2016 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Australia. This puts Jordy into a tied third place on the international pro surfer’s leaderboard.
It’s been a tough year or so for Jordy who has been plagued by injury, and marks the first time he’s been in a final since the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
After his performance Sunday morning, Jordy said: “What an incredible day. It felt so good to be in the finals again and I want to thank everyone for all the support and kind messages.”
Jordy revealed that he had surfed four heats today, and one “free surf” before the event began and is now feeling “pretty tired…but I’m super excited about competitive surfing.”
He said it had been an honour to surf against Australian legend Mick Fanning (who was famously attacked by a shark at Jeffreys Bay last year) in the semi-finals in what was Fanning’s last competition.
Jordy lost out in the finals to Australian champ and world number one surfer Matt Wilkinson.
In a message on Facebook, Jordy said “Matt Wilkinson was on fire. Well done bru. Funny thing is that I used to travel around to a few events with Matt and his father Niel in their bus to junior events around the corner from Bells ? Funny how all these years later we would be standing on the stage together…”
Jordy thanked his sponsors and “beautiful wife” for their support.
The next event on the world surfing circuit is the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in Western Australia.
