Jomo Sono identifies what Bafana did wrong against Mali
“It’s not that Mali were better than us, no! In the first half, we were better than Mali, but we panicked.” Jomo Sono said.
Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono says Bafana Bafana lost the Mali game in the first half when they failed to convert their chances.
Bafana succumbed 2-0 to the West Africans in their first match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Sono, who coached the national team at the 1998 Afcon and 2002 World Cup, told KickOff that Hugo Broos’ charges lacked the killer instinct.
“We should have won, in the first half, we played very very well. We should have finished the game in the first half. Going forward South Africa, if they can play the way they did in the first half, they will beat Namibia,” Sono said.

Sono believes Bafana can beat their neighbours but warned that the Tunisia game could decide the national team’s Afcon fate.
“The most difficult game for me is going to be Tunisia because they are more organised. They should have finished Mali, they should have taken their chances, they didn’t take their chances,” he said.

“In football, if you don’t take your chances, you get punished, so Bafana were punished. It’s not that Mali were better than us, no! In the first half, we were better than Mali. That set piece changed the complexion of the game and most of our players are playing local so they started panicking,” Sono added.
