Hugo Broos considered quitting Bafana Bafana
Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos considered quitting the South African squad after the 5-0 lashing by France in Lens in 2022.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed that he almost resigned from his position after his team suffered a crushing 5-0 defeat against France in a friendly match in March 2022.
Following the loss, there were calls from South African soccer fans for Broos to step down immediately. However, despite the pressure, Broos persisted.

He led Bafana to the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations(Afcon) this year.
“I thought about it [quitting] because after the game against Morocco away [a 2-1 Afcon qualifying defeat] I went home for five weeks and spoke to my former assistant coach in Belgium,” Broos was quoted on TimesLive.
“We spoke about what we were going to do, but I didn’t want to quit.

“There was something that said to me, ‘Go now when everything is negative and there is nothing good’, but there was a voice that said, ‘Go on’.

“The voice said believe in what you believe in because it will happen and it happened, but I was close to quitting,” he said.
Broos won the Afcon back in 2017 with Cameroon and having appointed Bafana’s head coach in 2021, he said he felt he needed to make a difference in South African football.

“I came to South Africa with something in my mind but from the beginning, I couldn’t understand why, in a country like this, there was something that was not normal with the results of the national team,” he said.
