How much would you buy Kaizer Chiefs for?
Everybody has their price, even Soweto Giants Kaizer Chiefs, but how much money would it take to convince Motaung Snr to sell?
Financial experts can seemingly put a value on anything, however, the value of a football club can be extremely nebulous and that is no different when it comes to Kaizer Chiefs.
The Soweto Giants have had their struggles on the pitch, the club’s brand sterngth and commercial value remain very high.
While many would argue that a lot of the players on Kaizer Chiefs’ books have inflated values, that collection of players fluctuates quite a lot over time.
HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST TO BUY KAIZER CHIEFS?
The first obstacle to discovering the price of Kaizer Chiefs is the current owners unwillingness to entertain the notion of a sale.
Kaizer Chiefs belongs to the Motaung family and it doesn’t look like that will change any time in the near future.
The club was founded by Kaizer Motaung Senior back in 1970 growing to become the most decorated club in South African football.
Motaung Senior now has a reported net worth of R1.2 billion and it is believed that a sale discussion would only open if a potential buyer brought in an offer that was also north of the R1 billion mark.
Given that the likes of Johan Rupert and Patrice Motsepe already have their toes in football club ownership it seems unlikely that a South African individual or even consortium could convince Kaizer Chiefs to sell.
BALLPARK FIGURE
A few years ago, TS Galaxy owner Tim Skukazi estimated that Kaizer Chiefs would cost the buyer at least R1 billion if not more.
“If you’re talking Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates or [Mamelodi] Sundowns, then you’re talking something else, maybe even R1 billion,” Sukazi said in a conversation with the South African Football Journalists’ Association as per Sport24.
“There’s no chance you could buy Kaizer Chiefs for less than R1 billion. You must look at what’s there at the club.
“They have got a Vodacom sponsorship and maybe they spend R75 million or R80 million, alone. Then there’s Toyota and all the rest (of the sponsors).
“It’s a well-decorated club from a sponsorship perspective, which has got monetary value in it. Before you wake up, their sponsorships would be in the region of R150 million or there about.
“And then there are other things like their player values, goodwill, it’s got a rich history and that will count in the pricing model.”
Naturally this is just conjecture because it isn’t likely that the club will be leaving the Motaung family any time soon.
