Tau seemed primed for a lucrative contract extension at Al Ahly, who now look to have changed their tune.
The Bafana Bafana international was in scintillating form for Al Ahly prior to the 2023 Afcon in Ivory Coast.
He ended the 2022/23 season with 17 goal contributions in 42 games.
That saw his name linked with overseas interest once again. A promising start to the season saw Tau get six goals, but he seems to have stagnated on them, with no assists.
His form from the previous season seemed to be the driving point for contract extension talks.
This new contract was set to make Tau the highest paid player on the African continent.
According to Egyptian reports, it would’ve been a three-year deal.
That would’ve have seen the 29-year-old earning R23 million annually.
It would then increase by R1.9 million in the first year, R2.8 million in the second and then R3.8 million in the final year.
That would’ve seen the attacker spend the rest of his prime years at Al Ahly.
But now, the latest reports indicate that Al Ahly have since changed their minds.
According to Kora Arabia they want to cash in on him instead.
They have not been impressed by Tau’s level of late.
His struggles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would’ve also not helped matters for him.
It is believed that it would now be harder to justify spending that many dollars on the player.
KOLLER AGREES TO AL AHLY SELLING TAU IF THEY FIND BETTER REPLACEMENT
Regardless of this, Tau has remained a favourite for Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller.
Koller has long been advocating for the club to keep the player at all costs.
He has now, reportedly conceded to the transfer committees latest request for him to be sold.
The mentor did, however, make a request of his own.
He pleaded with him to line up a replacement that is going to be even better than the former Mamelodi Sundowns star.
It will be interesting to see if Al Ahly does, indeed sell Tau and where he ends up next.
