The presidency warned the public of “scams on social media where people are asked to deposit money into bank accounts in support of President Jacob Zuma”, it said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Such requests have fraudulently been made in light of the submission of the Nkandla homestead non-security upgrades report to the Constitutional Court by the National Treasury.
“No account has been opened for this purpose and no request has been made for members of the public to contribute.”
It was reported on Tuesday, meanwhile, that members of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal are being encouraged to help make contributions to Zuma so he can #PayBacktheMoney. A similar request was reportedly hinted at several months ago by the Mpumalanga premier, David Mabuza.
In late March the ConCourt ruled that Zuma had not respected the constitution by ignoring the public protector’s ruling on Nkandla, and that the treasury would have to work out how much he needed to pay on non-security upgrades at his Nkandla residence. That led to the treasury’s order on Monday.
