After a 13-hour marathon meeting, the ANC NEC has reportedly resolved to recall South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma… after he allegedly refused to resign when asked to do so by the ANC earlier in the evening. This is according to reports from journalists who have camped out all night outside the St George’s Hotel in Irene, near Pretoria, where the meeting of the ANC’s top executives was held.

News24’s Mahlatse Mahlase‏ tweeted: “ANC NEC has decided to recall President Jacob Zuma after he earlier refused to resign. Sources say the meeting turned down Zuma’s request for a 3 months stay. The ANC will write to him a letter on its decision, then they will hear from Zuma.”

Zuma had allegedly agreed to resign during his Tuesday meeting with Ramaphosa, but wanted to remain in office for three months. This was reportedly rejected by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

A source allegedly told News24 “it wasn’t an easy task”.

One social media commenter joked: “Zuma’s response to his recall will be a cabinet reshuffle starting with Ramaphosa himself.”

No official comment has been issued yet. Update: A post NEC media briefing will be held at 14h00. The ANC said it had been postponed from midday “by the need to ensure that all necessary communication protocols, including direct communication to ANC structures on the NEC decision, are complied with.”
