The corruption case involving former Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa has been rescheduled for 24 October.

Kodwa and his co-accused Jehan Mackay returned to the Johannesburg Specialised Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge on Thursday, 3 October. The two were arrested by the Hawks on 5 June and were released on R30 000 bail each.

The two face charges of Contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, emanating from the period between April 2015 to February 2016, when Kodwa was African National Congress (ANC) national spokesperson.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Kodwa received direct payments and luxury accommodation worth over R1,6 million paid by and/or facilitated by Mackay as gratifications for his interventions in government procurement processes to advance the interests of Mackay, TSS and EOH.

Ahead of the court proceedings on Thursday, Kodwa maintained his innocence and his legal representation Zola Majavu also insists that the state’s case is weak.

“Having gone through the docket as provided to me by the state, having read the charge sheet and the information that they are hoping to substantiate the judges on, their case is palpably weak,” Majavu told eNCA.
